Kathy Bates, 77, addressed claims about her dramatic weight loss, clarifying it was a gradual process built on dedication and healthier choices, not just medication. “People say, ‘Well, it was the Ozempic.’ F— you, it was the Ozempic! It took me years to do this. I got this diagnosis about diabetes — my father died of it; his mother died of it; one of my sisters is in peril. When they said ‘diabetes,’ I figured out what to do to slowly, over years, to lose the weight.”

Bates shared that while Ozempic helped her shed the last 15 to 20 pounds, the majority of her progress came from sustained lifestyle changes. She spoke candidly about the emotional component of her journey, sharing how wearing designer dresses for the 2025 Emmy Awards moved her to tears as she adjusted to her new self-image.

“I just started crying and crying. I’m still figuring out what it’s like to be without all of that weight. What was it for? What was I hiding myself from? What are the emotions that are pouring out because I don’t have that armor? It just really surprised me, really shocked me.”

Bates discussed adapting her eating habits, increasing her activity level, and shifting her mindset from willpower to determination as critical factors. She noted that she feels healthier, more energetic, and proud of her achievements, crediting her determination and desire to prevent further health complications.

“You know, they always say, ‘Oh, you don’t have enough willpower.’ I just changed that word to determination. It was my choice.”
