T.J. Maxx Clearance: 4 Insider Secrets Revealed
Health Points
- T.J. Maxx clearance prices are set by a computerized system, not staff.
- Identical products may have different clearance prices based on their arrival dates at the store.
- Clearance items require both the original ticket and receipt for returns.
- After clearance season ends, further markdowns aren’t possible on remaining items.
T.J. Maxx shoppers adore finding deals on home and fashion must-haves, but there’s more to those clearance stickers than meets the eye. One former employee is sharing how pricing and returns actually work behind the racks.
According to Bena Solomon, “We as workers do not decide how an item gets marked down. We scan the ticket and whatever comes out, that’s the price.”
Shoppers may discover two identical pieces with different price tags. It turns out, this isn’t a mistake—it just depends on when each item arrived on the sales floor. The longer an item’s been at the store, the better the markdown.
Returning a clearance item? Be ready with both the ticket and your receipt. If either is missing, T.J. Maxx can’t process the refund due to their policy on clearance merchandise.
Clearance periods happen twice each year, with final reductions signified by yellow tags. “Once clearance season ends, we can not mark down anymore—meaning, if you see an item here and it was never marked down during clearance season, that’s because it’s not due for a markdown,” Solomon said.
Shopping smart at T.J. Maxx means knowing how clearance works, so you get the best deals without any surprises at checkout or returns. Keep these tips in mind next time you browse the red and yellow stickers!
